Introducing New Zealand's first Te Awhi Rito Reading Ambassador
Last year, we shared the news that a Te Awhi Rito Reading Ambassador would be appointed to boost youngsters' engagement with books and help create a nation of readers.

We're now very pleased to report that New Zealand's first ever Te Awhi Rito Reading Ambassador is writer and publisher, Ben Brown (Ngati Mahuta, Ngati Koroki, Ngati Paoa).

Ben writes children's books, non-fiction, poetry and short stories for young readers and adults, and he's bringing experience and passion to the Te Awhi Rito Reading Ambassador role.

Here, Ben explains why reading is so important for young Kiwis, their whanau and communities. He shares reading advice for the home and child care setting, and provides some book recommendations, too.
Appendicitis in children
Appendicitis is relatively common in childhood, with around one in 40 Kiwi kids suffering from this inflammation of the appendix.

However, common or not, this is a potentially serious condition that can cause a sudden deterioration in your child's health, particularly if they're under five.

It's important to get medical treatment quickly if you think your child has appendicitis symptoms, and a new study has found that some children aren't getting healthcare quickly enough.

A study of 14 hospitals around the country has found that rural and Maori children are more likely to have severe appendicitis than their urban and non-Maori peers. So, let's look at the symptoms of appendicitis, and explore the research in more detail.
