Early Childhood Education and Care News
November 9, 2021
Kia ora, this week how to take care of one of your most precious tools: your voice. Also how children's play has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Vocal strain: Educators at risk
Have you ever strained your voice? Well, you're not alone. Local and overseas studies have shown teachers are at a higher risk of vocal strain than many in the general population and early childhood educators need to be aware of their own vocal health and how to minimise risks in their daily activities.

A survey by the University of Auckland in 2015 showed voice problems are a concern for New Zealand teachers and there is limited awareness among teachers about vocal health, potential risks, and specialised health services for voice problems.
Post pandemic play
In a world where we're now all taught to distance ourselves socially from others, for our health and safety and theirs, what impact are COVID-19 and our post-pandemic lifestyle having on children's play?

Flinders University PhD candidate Jennifer Fane, whose research focuses on communicating with preschoolers, says in her article about safe interactions for children in a post-pandemic world, "The closure of playgrounds, schools and the fear and worry associated with being in public spaces has likely had significant impacts on children during this time."
