Early Childhood Education and Care News
June 15, 2021
Kia ora, this week how to spot, stop and prevent bullying in early learning settings and ideas for celebrating Matariki with the tamariki in your service.
How to spot, stop and prevent bullying
Do you know the difference between fighting and bullying? Would you be able to spot an incident of bullying even in children as young as two to five years of age?

A recent study of early childhood teachers conducted by researchers from the University of South Australia, reported that when asked to define the three main components of bullying, namely an intent to harm, repetition, and a power imbalance, only 17 per cent of respondents were able to articulate what constituted bullying.

Most teachers recognised that bullying involves an intent to harm and repetition, but just 40 per cent identified an imbalance of power between young children as a factor.
Make Matariki shine
Matariki was announced as a new public holiday to begin on 24 June 2022, and while there’s no holiday this year, it's a great opportunity to embrace families with the Maori New Year spirit of community, belonging and sharing.

For educators, this year's Matariki will be celebrated from 19 June to 11 July. Matariki plays an intrinsic role in Māori culture and describes the star cluster signalling the start of Maori New Year.

It is a celebration steeped in Māori legends, cultural believes and practices. This festival is a learning journey not only for young children but also for their families who may not know much about Matariki.
