Early Childhood Education and Care News
August 17, 2021
Kia ora, this week how to support early learners who come from a multi-lingual or bi-lingual background. Also, a reminder about the importance of barefoot experiences for children in early childhood services.
Supporting multilingual children: "It takes a village"
Within twenty-first century Aotearoa New Zealand there are over 200 spoken languages. The Census indicated that just over 18 per cent of the population identified themselves as being multilingual speakers with more than one language near fluently.

Amongst these, te reo Maori, Samoan, Hindi, Northern Chinese (including Mandarin), French and Yue (Cantonese) were identified as being the most common languages spoken.

This poses opportunities and challenges for early childhood educators, especially those who only speak English.
Barefoot learning: Benefits too great to walk past
A recent study has underscored the benefits of going barefoot, recommending that young children should go shoeless as often as possible.

These findings add to a growing body of evidence on the physical and developmental benefits of barefoot learning, encouraging educators to embrace joyful, shoe-free learning moments as part of their daily practice.
