Early Childhood Education and Care News
August 10, 2021
Kia ora, this week the importance of supporting children's social and emotional learning in the years before big school and we spill the beans on the finalists in this year's New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults (the winners will be announced tomorrow!)
Social and emotional learning
Working with young children in early learning environments means that ELEC teachers are well aware of the rapid rate of development that infants, toddlers and preschoolers experience at this age.

Preparing preschoolers for the transition to primary school involves targeting specific areas for development and helping kids to improve in these areas first and foremost. For a long time, this focus was on the cognitive development of children in early learning environments, particularly literacy and numeracy.

As a result, other areas of development that are equally important during these early years - if not even more so – were, at times, neglected.

Today, teachers and educators are becoming more aware of the need to guide young children through their social and emotional development, to help them get ready for starting 'big school' and make the transition as smooth as possible for everyone.
Maximising the benefits of beautiful books
The books children enjoy in early childhood stay with them for life.

Interesting words, pictures, characters and storylines help to build literacy skills and open up new perspectives and understandings, and educators are always on the look-out for inspiring reads and interactive ways of sharing the written word.

To help them, the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults  highlights the very best books for youngsters, and provides teaching resources to support kids' active involvement in reading, writing and illustration.

The winners of the 2021 Awards are being announced today, tomorrow 11 August and this week, we're focusing on the Picture Book Award finalists and sharing ways for educators to engage and excite early readers.
